Here are some films which you need to look into before watching. They all have tip top ratings and many have won top awards. Some of these are utterly brutal, others distressing. Before viewing pause for thought. You may regret seeing them.
Jin-Roh – A brutal love story. The ending is inevitable, expected, and will affect you.
Cool Hand Luke – An amiable Luke gets arrested and ends up in a brutal prison. He does not submit to the regime and makes many escape attempts. Amusing in places, it ends badly.
Grave of the Fireflies – Considered to be the most powerful anti war film ever. Two orphaned children trying to survive at the end of World War Two. The girl does not survive. Based on fact. A Studio Ghibli production so exquisitely drawn.
When The Wind Blows – A retired English couple experience the effects of a nuclear war. One of the animators refused to work on the project.
Get Carter – A brutal British gangland cult classic. The ending is jaw shocking.
The Illusionist (2010) – Directed by Sylvain Chomet of Belleville Rendezvous, script by Jacques Tati. Very downbeat and wearing, following the declining fortunes of a magician and his friendship with a young girl. Allegedly reflective of Tati’s own regrets regarding his estranged daughter. See it once, never again. Beautifully drawn.
The Sky Crawlers – Genetically made Kildren perpetually fight an aerial war, each side sponsored by different corporations. Overtones of Orwellian war is peace. Their exploits and deaths are avidly followed in the press. The pointless war takes a toll on the Kildren, not pleasant to see. Perhaps not too far from wars realities over the years.
